In February, the Students on Ice Foundation travelled to Troms\u00f8, Norway, to take part in Arctic Frontiers 2026, one of the world\u2019s leading gatherings dedicated to dialogue and cooperation in the North. At a time when global attention is increasingly turning toward the Arctic, the conference created space for critical conversations about how the region is governed, protected, and sustained for generations to come.<\/span><\/p>\n Representing SOI were alumni Andrew Tucker, Tukai Augiak, Veronica Flowers, and Lynda Brown. Together, they stepped into discussions exploring climate change, Arctic research, Indigenous leadership, and the ongoing impacts of colonization \u2014 conversations that underscored the importance of centring Indigenous knowledge and intergenerational perspectives in shaping the Arctic\u2019s future.<\/span><\/p>\n For SOI, youth voices needed to be not only present but actively contributing to these discussions. Historically, Arctic research and policy spaces have been dominated by older, Western perspectives. Arctic Frontiers 2026 demonstrated a meaningful shift: youth were visible across panels, sessions, and informal networking spaces, and their voices were being heard. \u201cIt was inspiring meeting all the other youth,\u201d Veronica shared. \u201cThere was a youthful presence felt across the conference.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The event offered powerful lessons in climate action and leadership. Panel discussions emphasized that while the Arctic is disproportionately affected by climate change, its communities have contributed the least to the emissions driving it. Andrew reflected, \u201cIt opened my eyes to how truly connected we are \u2014 what hurts one of us, hurts all of us, and we have a global voice.\u201d Sessions such as <\/span>Indigenous Engagement and Co-Creation in Arctic Research<\/span><\/i> reinforced that Indigenous peoples are rights-holders, not stakeholders, and must be central partners in shaping research and solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n Conversations also highlighted the importance of conducting Arctic research responsibly. From exploring low-impact, space-based ocean monitoring to reducing the environmental footprint of research vessels, participants emphasized innovation that advances knowledge while respecting fragile ecosystems. Panellists shared personal stories underscoring the need for long-term thinking rooted in cultural knowledge and youth-led leadership. \u201cDecisions made today will shape the realities the next generation inherits,\u201d Lynda reflected, pointing to the collective responsibility to mentor and empower future Arctic leaders. She was heartened to see how SOI alumni brought creativity, critical thinking, and lived experience to conversations \u2014 demonstrating that young leaders can offer solutions that are both innovative and grounded in stewardship.<\/span><\/p>\n For the SOI delegation, Arctic Frontiers was more than a conference \u2014 it was an affirmation of their roles as leaders today. Tukai left with a strengthened sense of Arctic identity and appreciation for home, sharing, \u201cI was able to enthrall myself into a painting that was once white but now I see different shades. And with those colours I am able to navigate the landscape.\u201d Andrew departed inspired to continue advocating for meaningful Arctic representation, while Veronica built new partnerships and renewed her commitment to community cultural programming.<\/span><\/p>\n
