Core Principles for Educators & Staff

The following core principles guide each and every one of our successful expeditions. By embracing these “Keys to Success,” you help steer the ship towards a safe, enriching, and transformative experience for every participant.

1. Model Flexibility

Expedition plans can change due to weather, wildlife sightings, or unexpected opportunities. Stay adaptable and help youth embrace curiosity and resilience. Help us turn something unexpected into a learning opportunity! Flexibility is the key!

2. Direct Any Concerns Appropriately

As an SOI educator, you represent the organization. If issues arise, bring them directly to expedition management rather than addressing them independently.

3. Prepare for the Day

Start each day with base layers on, sunscreen applied, and your daypack ready to go. Being prepared sets the tone for a smooth and enjoyable experience.

4. Be On Time For Briefings

Timeliness is key to keeping our action-packed days on track. Youth will follow your lead!

5. Be Present

Help create an unplugged, immersive environment. If you notice a youth using headphones or earbuds, kindly remind them to put them away.

6. Encourage Smooth Sailing

While discipline is not the educator’s role, we ask for your support in reinforcing expectations to keep the program running smoothly.

7. Go With the Flow

Daily plans will be shared as soon as possible. Stay open to changes and embrace the journey!

8. A Good Night's Sleep

Sleep is so important for the success of the expedition, so make sure you get lots! A good night's sleep will help equip you for the challenges and opportunities in the day to come!
