Cape Breton and Sable Island Street View

Sable Island is a place of extraordinary ecological significance, known for its diverse flora and fauna, including the iconic Sable Island horse. Managed by Parks Canada as a protected National Park Reserve, this island is home to a few federal government staff year-round, with numbers rising during summer months due to increased research projects and tourism activities. And although it’s a working island that is home to Meteorological Service of Canada and Canadian Coast Guard for Search and Rescue operations, it is also designated as an Important Bird Area. Sable Island stands as a testament to the delicate balance between human presence and environmental stewardship in our natural world.

St. Paul Island Street View

Explore the rugged beauty of St. Paul Island, a rocky gem in the sea north of Cape Breton Island. Named by the renowned explorer Jacques Cartier, this island commands attention as it stands directly in the path of ships navigating the Gulf of St. Lawrence. St. Paul Island is not only a scenic wonder but also an important bird area, attracting various avian species due to its unique geographical positioning. As you navigate through its “virtual street,” you’ll encounter our SIO team on a zodiac landing marvelling at the natural splendour that characterizes this island. St. Paul Island’s significance extends beyond its physical beauty, serving as a vital habitat for diverse marine and avian life, contributing to the intricate web of ecosystems in the regional maritime environment.
