The MV Ocean Nova

The MV Ocean Nova is a small, nimble 95-passenger expedition vessel designed for safe and comfortable travel in Arctic waters. At 73 metres long and ice-strengthened to a 1B ice class, she’s built to navigate the polar regions responsibly while giving participants an up-close understanding of northern environments.

On board, the Ocean Nova feels like a floating campus. There are cozy cabins, bright communal spaces, and plenty of room for learning, reflection, and connecting with your peers. The ship includes dedicated areas for workshops and presentations, a welcoming dining room, and quiet spots to take in the landscape and wildlife.

The crew and expedition team work together to create a supportive, inclusive environment where safety comes first, and curiosity is encouraged. Whether you’re gathering on deck for a wildlife sighting, attending a learning session, or sharing meals with new friends, the Ocean Nova becomes a home away from home—a space where ideas grow, connections form, and the Arctic becomes the greatest classroom on Earth.

Life at Sea

Life at sea has its own rhythm—one that’s different from home but quickly becomes familiar as we settle into community living, teaching, and exploration. As an educator, you play an important role in helping youth feel comfortable, stay safe, and adapt to the unique conditions of ship life.

Wildlife Sightings

Wildlife moments are a highlight of expedition life. All sightings are announced over the PA system and logged in the official expedition record. If you spot something—from walruses to whales—please notify SOI staff so we can share the experience with the full group.

Bridge Policy

Educators, like youth, may have opportunities to visit the bridge during scheduled tours. The captain and crew enjoy explaining navigation and ship operations when conditions allow. Please help model respectful conduct and attentiveness while on the bridge.

Moving Safely Around the Ship

You’ll hear “one hand for the ship” often. It’s a reminder to always keep one hand free to steady yourself, especially in rough seas. Using handrails and moving with awareness sets a great example for participants and keeps everyone safe. Remind youth of this useful mantra whenever you deem it appropriate.

Dining

The dining room accommodates everyone comfortably, offering American and Continental cuisine with table service at dinner. Water, tea, and coffee are available throughout the day—bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. It is important for our team to be aware of any and all dietary restrictions or needs. We are really skilled at accommodating everyone; however, we must be made aware of your needs well before the expedition program starts. If you forgot to mention anything during registration, or you need to update your dietary information, please email: apply@soifoundatin.org

Cabins

Cabins include private washrooms and individual climate controls. Educator cabins are located near other program staff, not far from youth cabins. Housekeeping is provided daily, but maintaining a tidy space helps keep routines smooth and ensures a comfortable living environment.

Climate Control & Electricity

The ship is equipped with central air conditioning and heating throughout. The ship operates on 220AC with European 2-pin outlets. Please bring an adapter if needed. Do not bring personal heating devices (like hair straighteners or irons) or transformers. Hairdryers are provided in all cabins.

Medical Services

A trained medical team—such as a nurse or physician—travels with us for the entire duration of the expedition. The vessel is equipped with a dedicated clinic, and ship medical staff support care as needed. Educators may help guide youth in seeking medical support early if concerns arise.

Waste Disposal

All waste and sewage remain onboard until we reach a suitable port. Please help reinforce leave-no-trace principles by ensuring no litter is left behind during shore excursions.

Seasickness

Seasickness can affect anyone, including seasoned travellers. If you’re prone to motion sickness, bring enough medication for the entire journey. Some options cause drowsiness, so consider what works best for you. Arriving prepared helps you support youth effectively.

Water & Conservation

Freshwater is limited aboard the vessel. Please bring a reusable bottle and fill it throughout the day. There may be times when water conservation is required—your leadership in modelling mindful water use makes a big difference.

Toilets

Marine toilets are sensitive and require extra care. Only human waste and toilet paper should be flushed. All other items—including period products, wipes, tissues, and paper towel—must go in the designated waste bins. Educators help set expectations and support youth in keeping the system functioning smoothly.

Smoking Policy

If needed, smoking or vaping is permitted only in designated outdoor areas and only during breaks or free time. Cigarette waste must be disposed of in the appropriate containers and never left on land. In rough conditions, the captain may restrict access to the smoking area for safety—please respect these decisions and help communicate them to youth if needed.
