SOI expeditions are immersive learning experiences, not vacations. As an educator, you play a vital role in shaping meaningful learning opportunities for youth. Beyond delivering programming, you will contribute to leadership, logistics, mentorship, and emotional support.
Flexibility and collaboration are essential, as educators are expected to step into various roles as needed, supporting both the program and participants.
As an SOI educator, you are more than a subject matter expert—you are also a mentor, guide, and co-learner. Our approach values both structured programming and informal learning moments, whether it’s teaching photography techniques, guiding youth in setting up science equipment or engaging in deep discussions about career paths.
Early in the expedition, your role may involve sparking curiosity and building foundational skills. As youth gain confidence, you will help them deepen their knowledge and refine their interests. We encourage you to listen, observe, and support participants in shaping their own learning journeys.
For insights into the daily expedition experience, refer to A Day in the Life.
All participants—youth, educators, and staff—are expected to work together in a spirit of respect and collaboration. Disrespectful behaviour toward participants, community members, or ship staff will not be tolerated. If concerns arise, please bring them directly to a member of the SOI Management Team.
To foster meaningful connections, we ask all participants to unplug for the duration of the expedition. Internet access is limited to the SOI Communications Team, and youth will not have WiFi access. Exceptions for educators may be made in specific cases, but priority remains with the Communications Team.
If you bring a laptop, please keep it in your cabin and use it only for relevant programming. Given the nature of daily excursions on land and in Zodiacs, laptops should not be taken outside the ship. If you wish to share a presentation, please transfer your content to a USB drive—we will provide a designated presentation computer.
There are no printers or designated office spaces on board, so please bring all necessary materials pre-printed and ready for use.
Youth participants will not have access to the ship’s Wi-Fi. Educators who require internet for work-related tasks (e.g., permits, media uploads) may receive limited access, but bandwidth is extremely limited, and usage will be prioritized for essential communications by expedition leads and the media team. Streaming and large downloads are not permitted, and access may be adjusted if demand is too high.
