Meeting Youth Where They Are

SOI’s learning program thrives on an interdisciplinary and experiential approach. With a diverse team of educators on board, learning extends far beyond the ship’s designated educational spaces—whether through informal conversations over meals, observing Arctic wildlife from a Zodiac, or engaging in a workshop on conservation efforts led by local knowledge holders and scientists. Learning happens everywhere and each day presents new opportunities!

But learning with youth is most effective when we meet them where they are. Fostering deep engagement and making the learning experience personally relevant means tailoring discussions to their existing knowledge and interests, recognizing that every participant brings a unique perspective and level of comfort.

No two days are the same, and as an educator, you will have the opportunity to help participants make connections between what they experience and the larger challenges and opportunities shaping the future of marine conservation and sustainability in the North. When planning your approach, please consider:

1. Age-appropriateness

Many youth participants are under 18, so content should be age-appropriate.

2. Group Size

Learning groups may be small (three activities running concurrently) or large (one collective session).

3. Language Level

Language accessibility is key—ensure content is clear and inclusive for all participants.

Be Flexible

By embracing this flexible, interactive, and interdisciplinary approach, you help create a learning environment where every moment is an opportunity for discovery. Your passion and expertise are central to the success of the SOI program, transforming the Arctic and the ship itself into a dynamic, unforgettable classroom for our youth participants, or as we like to say, the greatest classroom on Earth.
