A Day in an SOI Educator’s Life
As an SOI educator, no two days on expedition look the same! Each day is shaped by the themes we’re exploring, the communities we’re learning from, the weather, and the collective interests of youth and staff. You’ll collaborate with the SOI Expedition Team to help shape programming, respond to the moment, and support youth-led curiosity. Flexibility is essential—expeditions are dynamic by nature, and plans often shift in exciting ways.
If you enjoy quiet mornings, you’re welcome to start your day with an early yoga class or a coffee on the observation deck. These are a couple of great ways to ground yourself and prepare for a day of teaching, mentoring, and connection.
Educators and youth meet as a full group—either the night before or the morning of—to review the day’s plan. This is your chance to help communicate the flow of activities, share ideas, and help set the tone for a positive, engaging learning environment.
Workshops take place across the vessel—in lounges, labs, informal spaces, or out on deck. You may lead workshops relevant to your area of expertise or assist with sessions. Educators play a key role in guiding discussions, supporting hands-on learning, and engaging youth meaningfully.
You’ll join Zodiac outings to lead youth in field-based learning. Conditions can be windy or wet, so proper layers, rain gear, and sturdy boots are essential. Be prepared to document observations and model field skills for youth.
When we go ashore, you’ll be part of immersive learning in local communities and natural environments. Land days often include collaboration with knowledge holders, scientists, Elders, and community leaders. As an educator, you help support cultural respect, safety, engagement, and thoughtful learning throughout these hands-on experiences.
Reflection is a core part of the learning journey. Educators help create space for creativity, storytelling, journaling, art, and quiet thought. These sessions help deepen learning, support emotional well-being, and offer youth a chance to process the day’s experiences. You may be called upon to help facilitate by sharing your own reflections from the day.
We come together each evening to reflect as a group. Educators may help guide discussions, support youth sharing, or participate in talks, performances, and community moments. This is also when updates for the next day’s tentative plans are shared.
