The Hub is your spot to find all of the pre-expedition materials you’ll need before our journey! Think of it as our digital base camp – be sure to check back here frequently for updates, and to find your Orientation Package, Pre-Learning Materials, and “Face Book” of fellow expeditioners!
To Do
Hello and welcome to your 2025 expedition Hub Page! Below are a list of items that you MUST complete prior to our expedition. Most of this should be straight forward, with everything you need linked and ready to good. If you have any questions during the process please reach out to cecile@soifoundation.org
Police Records Check for the Vulnerable Sector
Safety is important to our programming at SOI. Please note that ALL educators are required to have a Police Records Check for the Vulnerable Sector (to work with minors) from the past two years. Please contact Cecile to receive your letter to apply for a Police Record Check letter or your declaration in lieu (DIL). This is the first step to action as it might take several weeks depending on your Police office.
Please take the time in the next week to complete your registration, please click the link and fill out the online form. The form will collect all necessary details, including dietary specifications, allergies, emergency contact details, and any skills you can contribute to the expedition.
If you have any issues please let us know or email apply@soifoundation.org.
After having completed your registration SOI will be able to send you flight options, please keep an eye out for these.
Things to remember about flight bookings:
We will not book a flight without a valid piece of government-issued identification (loaded at the time of registration). Once booked, we will not make changes to the booking reservation, so please ensure all details to and from the expedition are confirmed as they are final.
Someone from SOI will reach out to you.
Baggage
The baggage allowance is 1 piece of checked baggage and 1 carry-on per person with a maximum combined weight of 50lbs (22.6kg). The planes we are chartering are small and the weight limit for baggage is strictly enforced.
Insurance
As per the details you give us on registration, SOI will provide your medical and evacuation insurance for the duration of your contract with SOI. You can read more about the insurance in the Educator Handbook.
If you have questions about your insurance contact tracy@soifoundation.org.
Please complete the "Educators' Contribution" form. The SOI team will then be able to support and incorporate all your great activities in your expedition programming.
If you have any questions, please reach out at cecile@soifoundation.org.
THE TIMELINE FOR THIS MEETING IS THE WEEK OF JUNE 9-13, 2025.
Pre-Expedition Educator Call is a great time to connect with the other people with whom you will spend a large part of your time on the ship. This is a chance for you to ask questions, introduce yourself, make connections with other educators, and more! It is the first step in the voyage, and crucial in making connections. This is also the time where we will review some possible activities that educators could collaborate on, as well as the available spaces on the ship. Following this call we will make sure we give you the support you need for your activities, and we can also speak more in depth about collaborations that you might have between educators.
Please complete the doodle to give us your availability for the week of JUNE 9-13, 2025.
Educator Orientation!
This is a chance to come together, both online and in person to start launching the expedition program. The Orientation grounds us all in the concepts of the expedition and in the approach we will be using to welcome, educate and support the participants and each other. Here is when we will dig into each role on the ship, the skills that we will be bringing, how we all can work together, and more. This is in person for the educators who will be joining in Ottawa, and we have created an online link for the educators who will be joining us at the ship.
The in-person date is Saturday July 12th 9am EST in Ottawa, with a team breakfast to follow.
*Please note that for those joining in Ottawa, the Educator Orientation marks the beginning of your active role on the Education Team. From this meeting forward we will have tasks and responsibilities set out for you, and you will need to remain with the group until the end of the Expedition.
If you have any questions please reach at cecile@soifoundation.org.
As always, we take your feedback seriously as we always want to be improving to have the best expedition experience possible. You will receive an email by the end of your expedition with the form to fill up.
Check your emails when you are done with your expedition you can also see the survey question on that link.
The following is a collection of materials that will help prepare you for the expedition ahead! This includes a collection of pre-learning materials to familiarize yourself with the places we will be visiting, and a "Face Booklet" to help get to know your fellow educators and expedition participants.
Educator Handbook
The Educator Handbook will prepare you for travelling with SOI on this expedition. Inside you will find details about your role as an educator, spaces on the ship, the learning journey as well as your packing list.
If you have questions about the Educator Handbook please reach out to Education@soifoundation.org.
Learning happens everywhere, and it starts even before we get onto the ship. This pre-learning document will share with you all the information about the route we are travelling, and the regions we are visiting. Please review it before you depart from your home community. Have a question? Send an email to education@soifoundation.org
Your expedition will be full of amazing people to meet. A few weeks out from the start of the expedition the Face booklet link will be live and you can learn about the other expedition participants and educators.
