Expect the Unexpected

A day in the life of an SOI expeditioner is never the same twice! How each day unfolds depends on the topics being explored, our location, weather conditions, and your passions and interests. The daily schedule will be communicated to you by the Education Team. Remember – flexibility is key when on an expedition.

1. Rise and Shine!

Gooooood morning, Students on Ice! If you are an early bird, you can get up and watch some of the early morning wildlife from the observation deck. This can be a great moment to be still and settle yourself for a big day ahead.

2. Morning Briefing

Participants will gather together to learn about the day’s adventures. While some programming is mandatory, you'll largely decide what activities you want to participate in.

3. Ship-Based Workshops

Gather in our many science spaces, lounges, or out on deck for a variety of shipboard workshops. You'll be able to choose between workshops on a variety of topics throughout the journey, including climate change, policy and governance, marine mammals, careers, and so much more.

4. Zodiac Excursions

See marine life up close on Zodiac excursions. These excursions can be windy so make sure you dress accordingly. Depending on the weather and the waves, rain pants and rubber boots are a good idea. Don’t forget your binoculars and camera!

5. Land-Based Workshops

While we spend a lot of time at sea, we will also have numerous stops on the land. This provides the opportunity to engage in hands-on, immersive learning with the people who are leading conservation efforts, conducting scientific studies, and training the next generation of environmental leaders.

6. Reflection

This is time to reflect. We value the opportunity to indulge in your creative side to help deepen your experience. We will have a variety of artistic, reflective, and meditative options to ground you.

7. Evening Recap

Participants gather to reflect on the day, and share their highlights. This reflection is sometimes followed by a short talk. There may also be a musical performance by musicians and collaborating participants. Details are often provided about the plan for the next day’s activities.

8. Sleep

You must be in your cabin for curfew. Sleep is so important for the success of the expedition, so make sure you get lots! A good night's sleep will prepare you for the day to come!
