The MV Ocean Nova is a small, nimble 95-passenger expedition vessel designed for safe and comfortable travel in Arctic waters. At 73 metres long and ice-strengthened to a 1B ice class, she’s built to navigate the polar regions responsibly while giving participants an up-close understanding of northern environments.
On board, the Ocean Nova feels like a floating campus. There are cozy cabins, bright communal spaces, and plenty of room for learning, reflection, and connecting with your peers. The ship includes dedicated areas for workshops and presentations, a welcoming dining room, and quiet spots to take in the landscape and wildlife.
The crew and expedition team work together to create a supportive, inclusive environment where safety comes first, and curiosity is encouraged. Whether you’re gathering on deck for a wildlife sighting, attending a learning session, or sharing meals with new friends, the Ocean Nova becomes a home away from home—a space where ideas grow, connections form, and the Arctic becomes the greatest classroom on Earth.
Life at sea isn’t quite like life at home, so there are a few things to keep in mind to stay safe and comfortable. Read on to learn all about them. You’ll quickly get used to the rhythm of ship life as we become a community and we learn, explore, and support one another on our journey.
All wildlife sightings will be announced over the ship’s PA system and recorded in the official expedition log. If you spot wildlife, please notify a staff member so the rest of the group can share in the experience.
Participants may have the opportunity to visit the bridge during a scheduled tour. The captain and crew are happy to answer questions about ship operations, as long as safety and navigation duties allow.
You'll hear the phrase "one hand for the ship" often during expedition. It's a way to remember that while walking around the ship, you should always keep one hand free to steady yourself—especially when the water is rough. Handrails are located throughout the ship; please use them.
The dining room accommodates everyone comfortably, offering American and Continental cuisine with table service at dinner. Water, tea, and coffee are available throughout the day—bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. It is important for our team to be aware of any and all dietary restrictions or needs. We are really skilled at accommodating everyone; however, we must be made aware of your needs well before the expedition program starts. If you forgot to mention anything during registration, or you need to update your dietary information, please email: apply@soifoundatin.org
All cabins have private washrooms and individual climate controls. Cabins accommodate 2–3 participants and are assigned based on gender expression. Expedition staff will be located nearby. Daily housekeeping is provided, but participants are expected to keep their cabins clean and organized.
The ship is equipped with central air conditioning and heating throughout. The electricity on board is 220AC electrical outlets, with European 2-pin round holes. Please bring your own adapter for outlets, but do NOT bring transformers, and please do NOT bring any hair straighteners, electric shavers, etc. Hairdryers are provided; please do not bring your own.
SOI travels with a dedicated medical team. There is a nurse or doctor on-site with the team from the moment the expedition begins until everyone flies home. The ship also carries a well-equipped medical clinic and travels with its own medical personnel.
All garbage and sewage are stored onboard until disposal is possible at a suitable port. Please help keep the environment clean by ensuring no litter is left during shore excursions.
Seasickness can affect anyone. Medications such as Gravol or Dramamine may help, but some cause drowsiness. It's a good idea to consult a doctor or pharmacist before the expedition. If you are prone to motion sickness, bring enough medication for the full journey. It is your responsibility to arrive prepared.
Please bring a reusable water bottle with you and replenish it frequently. You will find water fountains throughout the ship to drink from and to refill your water bottle. There may be times during the expedition when you will be asked to conserve water to extend our freshwater supply. With everyone’s cooperation, no real hardship will be noticed.
The toilets on the ship are different from toilets back home and can be very sensitive. We need everyone’s cooperation to ensure that the sanitary system works optimally. Human waste and toilet paper are the only things that should enter the toilet. Any period products, tissues, makeup wipes, paper towel, etc, should be placed into the waste bins provided. If not, the system can be clogged and it is not a pleasant experience!
If required, cigarette smoking and/or vaping may only take place in designated smoking areas during breaks or free time. Cigarette butts must be disposed of correctly in designated bins and should never be left on the land. While on the ship, only smoke in the designated outdoor smoking area, which you’ll be informed of when you board. In the event of rough conditions, the Captain may decide it is unsafe for you to be out there. If this happens, it will be important that you respect instructions. Keeping you safe is our top priority. There is no smoking permitted in any other area on board the ship.
