Overview
The Research Support Officer - Water coordinates water quality monitoring and data collection across northern Great Lakes waters. Key responsibilities include managing Water Rangers testkits, training community members, and leading weekly youth and public outreach events. The officer will analyze environmental trends, compile technical reports, contribute to a community newsletter, and develop a local field guide to present scientific findings directly to the community.

Supervised by: NORDIK Institute's Director of Operations (who is also the Water Team Lead)
Location: Based out of 390 Bay St., Sault Ste. Marie, ON; and/or 1520 Queen St. E., Sault Ste. Marie, ON; will be required to periodically be at various monitoring sites across Sault Ste Marie as well.
Supervises: None
Wages: $17.60 per hour, 30 hours per week
Duration of employment: 8 weeks
Anticipated start date: Immediately preferred (two positions)
Responsibilities:
- Coordinating water quality monitoring.
- Train community members in water quality monitoring using Water Rangers Testkits
- Manage Water Ranger Testkits, supplies, maintenance and calibration cycles.
- Organize community and youth events for water quality information, training and recruitment (one per week)
- Maintain inventory of supplies.
- Contribute to a community -based science newsletter
- Create a community field guide
- Collect water quality data from northern Great Lakes waters
- Analyze data collected – trends etc.
- Create technical report for community water quality data – showing trends and findings
- Create and present findings to community members
Eligibility (all are REQUIRED per our funder, Canada Summer Jobs):
- You MUST BE a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or someone who has been officially granted refugee protection in Canada. International applicants are NOT eligible and need not apply.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada (which means you must have a valid Social Insurance Number)
- You are between 15 and 30 years of age
- Need to work on-site from the office and/or field, as directed
Qualifications:
- STRONGLY PREFERRED: Have a G2 or G class driver's license
- PREFERRED: Access to a reliable vehicle
- PREFERRED: Early career worker
